Soundtrack to baby parenting

I’ve often thought there should be a show called Mum: The Musical on at the West End – but then again, no one would have time to watch it as we’re all knee-deep in sticker charts and dirty washing. But I can’t help but wonder what its soundtrack would be, those songs which appear in my head as I’m being woken up in the early hours or mopping sick off the carpet. Here’s my rundown of the ultimate Baby Mum songs…

No sleep ’til Brooklyn, The Beastie Boys

A lot of these song choices will focus on the lack of sleep. We’ve turned this into a theme tune in our house, often chanting ‘No sleep for Mummy’ in the early hours.

Eye of the tiger, Survivor

This is for early in the morning, when you’re trying to amp yourself up on three hours sleep.

Same Jeans, The View

“I’ve had the same jeans on for four days now…” No, I really have. My washing machine is constantly full of baby stuff so the opportunity for me to actually wash my clothes happens once in a blue moon.

Roar, Katy Perry

“You’re gonna hear me roar.” Oh, I know I will. When I’m eating, when I’m sleeping, when I’m on the toilet…

Enjoy the silence, Depeche Mode

Yes, enjoy it while it lasts. On those walks in the pushchair, or the first night they sleep all the way through.

Crying, Roy Orbison

Well, they do enough of it – don’t they?

Bills, LunchMoney Lewis

When you first go on maternity leave, you have no worries about money – then quicker than you can say ‘baby’ it dwindles in front of your eyes.

Under pressure, Queen

The perfect song for when the baby’s crying, dinners burning, the Amazon van has arrived and you need the toilet.

I’m so tired, The Beatles

Yeah, I did warn you a lot of this playlist was going to be about the sleep.

It won’t be like this for long, Darius Rucker

Ending this note on a high note, this song reminds you that although it’s tough, you’ll miss it when it’s over.
